Reverend MacBeth - P Howson I seen on the news some good news, which makes a pleasant change. Scottish artist Peter Howson has over come his personal problems and is well on his way to recovering from mental health issues. I never understood Peter's work when I was younger, his portraits of Madonna and Henrik Larsson were works I personally disliked, that was the only work I was aware of in the early noughties but it was only in the past 4 or 5 years I've looked deeper into his work, in fact it was a you tube video of Howson painting Dawn French that made Howson interest me and I went on to read about his personal life including his stint as an official war artist to try to understand Howson's work. It's only when you try to understand an artist as deep as Howson that you can fully appreciate the complexity. From disliking Peter's work I can honestly say now I'm at a point where Howson's work has influenced me and I'm delighted that he seems to be winning the battle with his demons. Vincent van Gogh As an artist, you realise there is no good or bad artists, just successful and unsuccessful artists. Good and successful do not go hand in hand in art. Jack Vettriano has proven you do not need the approval of the art establishment to be a success. Vincent van Gogh, arguably the greatest artist that ever died, his paintings are known by virtually every living human on the planet yet throughout his lifetime and career as an artist he sold just one solitary painting 'Red Vineyard at Arles.' It's unthinkable to think that such a poverty ridden career would lead to multi-million pound record breaking auction sales and van Gogh's painting's would be the pride of any major national art gallery after his death. |
